The farm was established in 1980 with a vineyard planted by Vincenzo D'Isanto, a Florentine accountant inspired by the desire to produce a wine evoking a different Tuscany. Careful soil analyses made it possible to identify the ideal varietals that express the wine-making vocation of this terroir: Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The first wine, I Balzini White Label, was the product of the 1987 harvest under the conduction of the famous taster Giulio Gambelli. Eleven years later, in 1998, the winery produced its second wine, I Balzini Black Label, which sees Merlot joining the Sangiovese and Cabernet varietals. Vincenzo’s enthusiasm ended up by infecting his wife Antonella and in 2005 she gave up her job as a professional consultant to dedicate herself to the farm. Together they created a third wine: I Balzini Green Label, a young wine made from 2006 onwards from Sangiovese and Mammolo, one of the oldest Tuscan varietals. In 2006 I Balzini joined the Comitato Grandi Cru d'Italia, the association founded in that same year to safeguard and promote wineries that have been producing wines recognised by both Italian and international wine guides for at least 20 years. The aim of the association, which has strict selection criteria, is to promote at world level wines representing the best of Italian wine making and, above all, wines that have managed to maintain unswerving levels of excellence. Admission to the association represents recognition of the efforts of Antonella and Vincenzo, as well as of their oenologist Barbara Tamburini and master wine taster Giulio Gambelli, responsible for supervising the final phase.
